During 2012, the federal Medicare meaningful use incentive payment program awarded $6.3 billion to 2,291 hospitals and 183,712 eligible professionals for their use of health information technology and electronic health records (EHRs) during 2011. Almost half of eligible hospitals and less than a third of eligible professionals received Medicare EHR incentive payments for 2012.
