November 15, 2004 Infant Deaths Increasing Due to Suffocation New York City officials announced October 7, 2004, that child fatalities are increasing due to the surge in the number of parents who have rolled over onto, and thus suffocated their infants while sleeping in the same bed. Fifty-eight New York City children, aged 14 days and over, have died between January and September 2004 compared with 37 in the same period in 2003.  Of the 58 deaths, 7 have been ruled homicides by the medical examiner, a decrease from last year.
