November 22, 2004 47% of Those in Addiction Treatment Suffer from Both Drug and Alcohol Abuse Of 1.1 million Americans in drug and alcohol abuse therapy in 2003, 47% were treated for both drug and alcohol abuse. Of the remaining 53% of individuals, 33% were being treated for drug abuse only, and 20% were being treated for alcohol abuse only. On March 31, 2004, 1,092,546 people were enrolled in substance abuse programs, of those, 87% were in outpatient treatment; 11% were in residential non-hospital treatment; and 2% were in inpatient hospital treatment.
