12% Of The Mental Health Conversation Volume To the Crisis Text Line Was From Rural America

People living in rural areas accounted for about 12% of Crisis Text Line’s conversation volume between 2019 and 2024. The conversation volume from rural areas represents more than 425,000 conversations involving nearly 228,000 individual texters. About 14% of the U.S. population lives in rural counties.

The most frequently;identified concerns were depression or sadness, mentioned in 37% of rural conversations; relationship problems, at 36%; anxiety or stress, at 34%; suicide, at 26%; and isolation or loneliness, at 21%. Multiple concerns could be identified during a single conversation.
