17% Of Residential Care Communities Have Dementia Care Units
About 17% of the nation’s estimated 31,100 residential care communities had a dementia specialty care unit in 2010. Dementia care units can be a separate wing, unit, or floor of a residential care community (or an entire community) that is designed specifically to care for individuals with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Of that 17%, 11% (3,400 communities) had a separate dementia unit on-site, while 6% (2,000 communities) served people with Alzheimer’s or dementia exclusively.
