There were 295,000 practicing primary health care professionals in the U.S. in 2010; 71% (209,000) were physicians, 19% (56,050) were nurse practitioners, and 10% (29,500) were physician assistants. About 33% (209,000) of the United States' 624,434 physicians in direct patient care were primary health care professionals.
