December 24, 2001 Florida's G. Pierce Wood Hospital Projected to Close in February 2002 As soon as February 2002, the Florida Department of Children and Families will close G. Pierce Wood Hospital, one of the state's four psychiatric hospitals. The hospital is closing because Florida is transitioning toward a greater reliance on community-based care. That is, moving away from long-term institutional care and toward in-home and outpatient care within the communities.
