15% Of U.S. Adults Reported Addiction In 2019 & 2020

In 2019 and 2020, about 15.4% of adults reported having a past-year addiction disorder, and most (93.5%) did not receive treatment. Of adults with an addiction disorder, 6.8% had an illicit drug use disorder, and nearly 11% had an alcohol use disorder. About 6% of youth reported having an addiction disorder during the same period. About 4.6% of youth had an illicit drug use disorder, and 2.9% had an alcohol use disorder.
