Within the 36 states that still operated at least one public residential facility (PRF) as of 2018, an estimated 17,557 people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DDs) lived in these facilities. This is a 3.9% decrease from the 18,239 people with I/DDs who lived in these facilities in 2017. A PRF is defined as a large, state-operated institution that houses people with I/DD.
