20% Of Nursing Home Residents Are Mistreated By Other Residents

During a one-month observation, 20.2% of residents at 10 New York State nursing homes experienced at least one incident of mistreatment by other residents. Mistreatment ranged from verbal abuse, invasion of privacy or menacing gestures, physical assault, or unwanted sexual contact. Higher rates of resident-to-resident maltreatment were observed among residents who were younger and more physically active, those with severe levels of cognitive impairment, or those residing on a dementia unit.
