20% Of U.S. Non-Profit Hospitals Invested In Housing As Part Of The Federal Community Benefit Mandate
About 20% of non-profit hospitals in the U.S. invested in housing as part of their federal community benefit mandate, according to a recent study of 433 hospitals. The majority, 346 (80%) did not mention housing needs in their community assessment. Of the 87 hospitals that invested in housing, the programs fell into one of seven categories:
Community partner collaboration (34%)
Social determinants of health screening (9%)
Medical respite centers (4%)
Community social determinants of health liaison (11%)
Addressing specific needs of homeless populations (16%)
Financial assistance for temporary and transitional housing (21%)
Targeting high-risk populations (5%)
