2024 Nursing Home Staffing 22% Below Levels Expected By Resident Case Mix Acuity
During 2024, nursing home staffing for nurse hours per resident day (HPRD) was about 22% below expected staffing levels based on a new staffing calculation that uses the facility case mix index (CMI) to determine appropriate nurse staffing levels. An analysis of payroll-based journal data submitted by nursing homes to the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) indicated that on average, nursing homes provided 3.73 total nurse staffing HPRD, which includes 0.60 registered nurse HRPD.
