23% Of Nursing Homes Are ‘Problem Facilities’
Of the total 15,136 nursing homes in the United States during 2022, 23.6% (3,578) are “problem facilities.” These facilities include those participating in the Special Focus Facilities (SFFs) program, those deemed SFF program candidates, and those assigned a one-star (lowest) overall rating by the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). SFFs and candidates are nursing homes determined by CMS to have a history of serious quality issues and thus eligible to participate in the SFF program to stimulate improvements in their quality of care.
