Of the total 14,858 skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) in the United States, 3,660 (24.6%) are considered problem facilities, according to recent data. The problem facilities fall into three groups. Some (85) have been designated as a Special Focus Facility (SFF) due to a high incidence of consumer complaints, and are subject to additional state and federal scrutiny related to operations. Others are candidates for the SFF program (440) or were awarded only one quality star (3,135) on the five-star Medicare Nursing Home Compare dashboard.
