28% Of Low-Income Adults Age 50 & Older Unable To Cover A $100 Emergency Expense

About 28% of U.S. adults age 50 and older with low income are unable to cover an unexpected $100 expense using their current savings, according to a recent report. Low income is defined as household income at or below 250% of the federal poverty level (FPL), which for a single-person household in 2025 totaled $39,125. Among low-income adults ages 50 to 64, 39% reported being unable to cover a $100 emergency expense from savings, compared with 21% of low-income adults age 65 and older.
