29% Of NYC School Police & Safety Incidents Involve Mental Health

Between July 2016 and June 2017, students experiencing emotional distress or mental health crisis represented about 29% of police interventions in New York City public schools. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) reported that it conducted 2,702 "child-in-crisis" interventions,"defined as an incident where a student in emotional distress is sent to a hospital for psychological evaluation. About 48% of "child in crisis" interventions reported in this period involved elementary school-aged students (12 and under).
