About 29% of the 1,932 opioid treatment programs (OTPs) in the United States are owned by private equity firms, totaling 562 OTPs. In other health care sectors, private equity ownership ranges from 2% to 11% of organizations in the sector.
The 562 OTPs owned by private equity belonged to one of 11 parent companies. The three largest parent companies accounted for 54.6% (307 OTPs) owned by private equity. The names of these three firms were not offered in the study.
