4.3% Of U.S. Adults Report Suicidal Ideation, 13.0% Of These Reported Suicide Attempts
About 4.3% of adults, experienced suicidal ideation between 2015 and 2019 (representing 9.7 million U.S. adults in 2015, and 12.2 million U.S. adults in 2019), and within this group, 13% reported a suicide attempt. Suicidal ideation is defined as thoughts or ideas about wanting to end one’s life, which can range from fleeting thoughts to detailed planning. Data on the prevalence of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts during this period was documented in the annual National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) waves.
