45% Of Insured Consumers Receive Erroneous Medical Bills, Less Than Half Challenge The Bill
Among insured health care consumers in the United States, about 45% received an erroneous medical bill or were charged a copayment for a service that should have been free. However, less than half challenged the bill. For 38% of those who disputed a medical bill, the balance was reduced or eliminated. Success rates were higher among Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries, at 61% and 46% of challenges resulting in a reduction or elimination of the disputed charges.
More than half (54%) of people who noticed a billing error did not challenge it because they did not know they had the right . . .
