5% Of Adult Medicaid Beneficiaries With Mental Illness Also Have I/DD
About 5% of adult Medicaid beneficiaries with mental illness diagnoses also had a co-occurring intellectual/developmental disability (I/DD), according to a recent analysis of Medicaid claims from 2016 to 2023. During that period, the analysis included 2.7 million Medicaid beneficiaries with a mental illness diagnosis. Of those adults, 137,916 also had I/DD.
After adjusting for beneficiary demographic characteristics and mental health diagnosis, adults with I/DD were 20% less likely to have a psychiatric hospitalization than adults without I/DD. The researchers said the finding could indicate barriers to accessing more intensive mental health services . . .
