6.2% Of Mental Health Facilities Are Owned By Private Equity Firms

A total of 642 mental health clinics and 1,152 clinics treating addiction in the U.S. had undergone private equity (PE) acquisition between 2012 and 2023. By the end of 2023, the number of PE-acquired practices constituted 6.2% of all mental health facilities and 7.1% of addiction treatment facilities nationwide.

The proportion of PE-owned mental health practices accounted for roughly a quarter of all facilities providing mental health treatment in Colorado (26.5%), Texas (23.9%), and North Carolina (23.0%).
