Highlighting the need for early risk detection, 61% of individuals with depression dropped out of psychotherapy after one session, according to a recent study. Previous mental health encounters, psychiatric evaluation, and being of White race and/or non-Hispanic ethnicity predicted decreased dropout likelihood. Individuals with a mental disorder due to a psychological condition and/or previous medical admission predicted increased dropout likelihood.
Among 40,732 adults with depression who started individual psychotherapy in community-based care, 28.4%, or 11,571 people, stopped treatment early. In practical terms, about 1 in 4 consumers did not continue beyond the study . . .
