70% Of People With Diabetes Report Stigma
About 70% of people diagnosed with diabetes believe they have experienced stigma associated with having the condition. About a quarter avoided sharing their diagnosis with family or friends due to embarrassment or concerns about the reaction to the news. About 40% said they skipped or missed a medical appointment due to shame.
These statistics were collected in a survey for the multi-year global Above the Bias initiative launched by Abbott Diabetes Care. The initiative seeks to end diabetes prejudice and to support people living with diabetes by helping to reduce stigma and other barriers.
