Nebraska Legislature Settles Dispute Over Juvenile Justice System Oversight
On March 1, 2016, the Nebraska legislature passed a bill to settle a dispute between state agencies about oversight of the state’s juvenile justice system. The bill forces a compromise between the court system and the recently created Inspector General for Child Welfare. The inspector general is responsible for investigating injuries or deaths among youth in the juvenile justice system, complaints from families and youth about how cases are handled or about probation officers, as well as investigating complaints related to care of children in the child welfare system.
