90% Of Homeless People In California Were State Residents Living In Poverty, Not Transients From Other States
About 90% of the more than 171,000 homeless people in California had been living in the state before losing their housing. About 75% of homeless Californians live in the same county where they were last housed. About 19% of homeless Californians became homeless after exiting an institution. Among those who had not been institutionalized, 60% had been housing insecure and prior to becoming homeless had been temporarily staying with family or friends, rather than having a lease or a mortgage.
