A History Of Traumatic Brain Injury Linked To 1.75 Times Higher Risk Of Dying From Brain Cancer

Among individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) admitted for inpatient rehabilitation following acute hospitalization, brain cancer mortality was 1.75 times higher than expected based on rates in the general population, according to a recent study.

The data come from the TBI Model Systems (TBIMS) National Database from 1987 through 2024. A total of 20,211 individuals with TBI were included in the analysis. During the observation period, 4,297 participants died, including 18 whose death certificate listed brain cancer as an underlying or contributing cause of death.
