About 27% Of Eight-Year-Olds With Autism Have Profound Autism
About 26.7% of eight-year-old children with autism from 2000-2016 had profound autism (IQ lower than 50 or entirely/mostly non-verbal). The prevalence of profound autism has increased since 2000, from 2.7 cases per 1,000 children aged 8 years in 2000, to 4.6 cases in 2016.
These were the findings from analyses of data from the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network.
