About 54% Of The $3.5 Billion Spent On Outpatient Opioid Prescriptions For Adults Was For Oxycodone
Of the total $3.5 billion spent annually between 2021 and 2022 on outpatient prescription opioids for adults age 18 and older, about 54% was for oxycodone. According to a recent analysis of household survey data, total outpatient prescription opioid fills and refills for adults during 2021-2022 totaled 68.6 million per year, down 55.1% from 152.8 million in 2015. Most fills in 2021-2022 (36.9%) were for hydrocodone (25.3 million). Oxycodone accounted for 28.0%, at 19.2 million fills. Tramadol accounted for 20.6%, at 14.1 million fills.
