Acute Kidney Injury Associated With 49% Higher Risk Of Developing Dementia
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with a 49% higher risk of developing dementia. The higher risk was noted in a longitudinal analysis of AKI and dementia incidence among more than 300,000 adults in Sweden age 65 and older. Over the 12-year follow-up period, 26% experienced AKI, which is a sudden deterioration in kidney function, and 16% of the participants developed dementia. The risk of dementia was highest among those whose AKI required hospitalization or inpatient care.
