ADHD Three Times More Common In People With Mood Disorders

Adults with mood disorders are three times more likely to have attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) than adults without a mood disorder. For this comparison, mood disorder included both major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder. People with bipolar disorder are 70% more likely to have ADHD than people with MDD.

About 28% of children and 17% of adolescents with MDD also have ADHD, as do 7% of adults. Among people with bipolar disorder, about 73% of children and 43% of adolescents also have ADHD, as do 17% of adults.
