Administrative Burden & Stress Are Leading Causes Of Physicians’ Early Retirement
Administrative burden and workplace stress are key factors that lead physicians to retire early, according to a survey of 971 physicians. About 45% cited administrative “hassles,” and 45% of the 521 clinically inactive physicians cited workplace stress as reasons for leaving clinical practice.
Leaving clinical practice to care for a family member or children was more common among women than men. Women were more likely than men to have left due to caregiving responsibilities for a family member, reported by 7.9% of women compared to 0.6% of men.
