Adults With Diabetes Who Switched To A High Deductible Plan Were More Likely To Experience Serious Acute Diabetes Complications

Adults with diabetes with employer-sponsored health insurance whose employers switched from a traditional health plan to a high-deductible health plan (HDHP) had 25% higher odds of experiencing an emergency department or hospital visit for severe hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). The odds of emergency department or hospital visits for hyperglycemia increased by 5% for each year of HDHP enrollment. The odds of emergency department or hospital visits for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) increased by 2% for each year enrolled in an HDHP.
