Advanced Practice Professionals Now Make Up 40.6% Of The Clinical Professional Workforce
As of the first quarter of 2025 (Q1 2025), non-physician advanced practice professionals (APPs), including clinical professionals such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants, made up 40.6% of the total clinical professional workforce, according to researchers with Kaufman Hall. The APP share of the clinical workforce has been steadily increasing over the past two years, according to the researchers. Between Q1 2023 and Q1 2025, APP full-time equivalents (FTEs) as a percentage of all practice FTEs increased from 36.5% to the current 40.6%.
