Alcohol Involved In 30.6% Of Illinois Opioid Overdose Deaths During 2017 To 2020

In Illinois, alcohol was involved in 30.6% of unintentional opioid overdose deaths from July 1, 2017, to December 31, 2020. During this period, there were 6,774 opioid overdose deaths, and in 2,073 of these deaths, the person had consumed alcohol at the same time as the person used opioids.
The prevalence of alcohol use with opioid use in an overdose death was higher for men (33.7%) than for women (21.8%). It was higher for non-Hispanic Black (33.1%) and Hispanic (39.0%) individuals than for white individuals (26.9%). The combined use was also . . .
