Among Hospitalized Older Adults, The Rate Of Delirium Increased Nearly 16% During COVID-19
The rate of delirium increased by 15.6% for hospitalized adults aged 66 and older, from 35.9 per 1,000 admitted population prior to COVID-19 to 41.5 per 1000 admitted population during COVID-19 (March 1, 2020, to March 31, 2022). Actual delirium rates were higher than projected rates for both men and women. For men, 40.0% experienced delirium during COVID-19, 11% above the projected rate of 36.0%. For women, 42.9% experienced delirium during the pandemic, about 20% higher than the projected rate of 35.9%.
