Among the 4% of U.S. adults who needed opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment in 2022, only 25.1% received recommended medications. A larger percentage (30.0%) received treatment without medications. OUD is defined as a problematic pattern of opioid use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress. Needing OUD treatment was defined as meeting DSM-5 criteria for mild or moderate OUD (two to five symptoms) or severe OUD (six or more symptoms) or receiving OUD treatment during the preceding year.
