Annual Admissions To Jails Shows 35% Decrease Over A Decade

From July 2022 to June 2023, local jails nationwide recorded 7.6 million admissions, and while this represented a 4% increase from the 7.3 million admissions the year before, annual admissions were 35% lower than a decade ago when admissions totaled 11.7 million, according to a recent report from the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics. The report highlighted demographic changes recorded at midyear 2023 as a snapshot in time and as indicative of trends, including:
