Antipsychotic Discontinuation Linked To Lower Rehospitalization In Older Adults After Acute Hospitalization
Among older adults without psychiatric disorders who filled a prescription for an antipsychotic prescribed to manage hospitalization-related delirium but later stopped taking the medication, the risk of rehospitalization and all-cause mortality was lower than among a similar group who did not discontinue the antipsychotic. The researchers said the lower risk to those who discontinued the prescription indicated the importance of minimizing the duration of antipsychotic use after an acute hospitalization. Data is limited on the outcomes of early post-discharge discontinuation of antipsychotics prescribed for delirium management, according to the study.Â
