Bariatric Surgery Volume Down 23% Between 2020 & 2024
The volume of bariatric surgeries declined 23% between 2022 and 2024, from 230,207 to 177,297, according to a recent study. The most frequent bariatric surgeries are sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass, together representing more than 90% of all bariatric procedures. Conversions, or revisions or modifications of prior surgeries, increased from about 9% of surgical volume in 2020 to 11% in 2024.
The researchers analyzed data from the ACS-MBSAQIP database for people who underwent six of the most common types of bariatric procedures between 2020 and 2024. The analysis grouped less common procedures as “other.”
