Bariatric Surgery Volume Down 23% Between 2020 & 2024
The volume of bariatric surgeries declined 23% between 2020 and 2024, from 230,207 to 177,297, according to a recent study. Sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass remained the dominant bariatric procedures, together representing more than 90% of all bariatric surgeries performed during the study period. Revision or conversion procedures increased from about 9% of surgical volume in 2020 to 11% in 2024.
The researchers analyzed data from the ACS-MBSAQIP database for individuals who underwent six of the most common types of bariatric procedures between 2020 and 2024. Less common procedures were grouped into an “other” category.
