Brilliant Detroit Launches Pilot To Prevent Child Abuse By Combining Peer Mentors & Benefit Navigators To Address Social Determinants Of Health
On July 15, 2020, Brilliant Detroit launched the Detroit Prevention Project, a pilot to prevent child maltreatment by matching 400 at-risk families with peer mentors to provide support and benefits navigators to address the families’ needs for social determinants of health (SDOH). The benefits navigators will be able to connect the families to community resources such as food, housing assistance, education, and employment. The goal is to reduce child removal from the home, decrease risk of child maltreatment, increase parent access to SDOH, and reduce children’s school absences.
