California DDS To Continue Limited Role In Conservatorships For Individuals With I/DD

In March 2023, a national panel of experts concluded that it is appropriate for the California Department of Developmental Services (DDS) to continue providing a limited role as an appointed conservator for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD). The panel, convened in August 2022 by DDS and the National Association of State Directors of Developmental Disabilities Services, was convened to conduct a thorough review the DDS conservatorship processes and make recommendations to improve the process, strengthen DDS’ oversight, and identify alternatives to conservatorship.
