California Department Of Social Services Overseeing Alameda County’s Child Welfare Department

As of July 29, 2026, the Alameda County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) is now operating under the oversight of the California Department of Social Services (CDSS), as announced by state Senator Aisha Wahab at a press conference. The change in oversight was the result of an on-site review CDSS conducted of the county department in March 2026.This review found that the agency needs technical assistance and support to comply with state welfare laws and regulations, according to a letter CDSS sent to the department.
