California Failing To Track Its Homelessness Spending Or Results

A new report by the California state auditor on governmental efforts to reduce homelessness found it is difficult to tell whether most homeless programs in the state were working because so little useful data has been compiled on either spending or outcomes. According to the report, the agency tasked with gathering that data — the California Interagency Council on Homelessness (ICH) — has analyzed no spending data past 2021, and three of the five state programs the audit specifically analyzed did not produce enough data to determine effectiveness. The auditor says that tighter oversight and accountability are mandatory.
