California To Create Single-Payer Health Care System

On October 7, 2023, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation to enact a single payer health care system for the state. The system covers a comprehensive package of medical, behavioral health, long-term services and supports, pharmaceutical, dental, and vision benefits, and the absence of cost sharing for essential services and treatments. The legislation, California Senate Bill 770 (SB 770), calls for the California Health and Human Services Agency (CHHS) to work with the federal government and with stakeholders to finalize a framework for a waiver to establish and implement a unified health care financing system by November 1, 2025 . . .
