Child Medicaid/CHIP Enrollment Declined 10% During Medicaid Unwinding
During 2023, the number of children enrolled in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) declined by 10% from 43.3 million in March to 39.1 million in December 2023, according to an analysis by the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families. In total, nearly 4.2 million children were disenrolled after the March 2020 Medicaid continuous coverage provision expired on April 1, 2023, and states resumed eligibility determinations. Most children who lost coverage were disenrolled for procedural reasons.
