CMS Issues Outline Of Suggested State Medicaid Autism Therapy Oversight
On August 4 2026, CMS released a “toolkit” on applied behavior analysis (ABA) benefit management with the purpose of supporting “state Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) agencies in making decisions regarding ABA service provision for Medicaid and CHIP beneficiaries with autism spectrum disorder (ASD),” the State Medicaid & Children’s Health Insurance Program Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Toolkit.
The toolkit authors state that the toolkit is “not a regulation.” It “should not be interpreted as establishing a standard of care or directing clinical judgment” and “does not endorse or require any particular treatment modality.”
