CMS Rescinds Guidance On Medicaid, CHIP Coverage Of Health Related Social Needs
On March 4, 2025, the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) rescinded two previously issued guidance documents about coverage of services and supports to address health related social needs (HRSNs). In the notice, CMS said it is evaluating policy options consistent with Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Plan (CHIP) program requirements and objectives.
Going forward, the notice says CMS will consider states’ applications to cover these services and supports to address HRSNs on a case-by-case basis to determine whether they satisfy federal requirements for approval under the applicable provisions of the Social Security Act . . .
