Colorado Auditor Recommends Child Welfare System Improvements
Following a performance audit of the Colorado child welfare system, the Colorado Office of the State Auditor called on the Department of Human Services’ (CDHS) to work with counties to improve screenings of child maltreatment reports, the timeliness of initial contact, and the adequacy of risk assessments. The auditor faulted CDHS oversight of the counties.
The auditor recommended CDHS do the following:
Establish new rules for what should be included in reviews by the Child Fatality Review Team
Clarify guidelines for county referral screenings
Clarify rules and offer additional guidance to improve county reporting of “egregious incidents of child abuse . . .
