Connecticut To Close Juvenile Detention Facility By July 2018

The Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF) is preparing to close the Connecticut Juvenile Training School (CJTS) by July 2018 as directed by the Governor in December 2015. As of August 2, 2016, the CJTS census was 51 youth. The number of CJTS admissions has dropped by 29% from the 252 admissions in 2013 to 179 in 2015. From January 1, 2016 to August 1, 2016, there were 73 admissions.

Legislation enacted on June 10, 2016, House Bill (HB) 5642 includes steps toward closing CJTS and other recommendations of the the Juvenile Justice Policy Oversight Committee. The stated goals . . .
