Court Grants California Two-Year Extension To Meet Prison Capacity Reduction Targets
On February 10, 2014, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) was granted a two-year extension to its deadline to reduce the state prison population to 137.5% of design capacity. Currently the state prison population is at 144% of design capacity, representing about 117,500 prisoners. By June 1, 2014 the population will be at 143% of design capacity, about 116, 650 prisoners.
